How to Become A Christian

Before we answer the question of how one becomes a Christian let us first give a brief answer to the question, What is a Christian?

What Is A Christian?

A Christian is one who believes that there is one, true, perfect God. They realize they do not and can not live up to God’s standards and need His forgiveness. They accept that God came to earth in the person of Jesus, that Jesus being God was perfect and as the perfect God-man made restitution on their behalf to God thus reconciling them with God. Reconciled with God they now have peace with God. They then live their lives according to the teachings of Jesus and the Bible.

How Do I Become A Christian?

Want to become a Christian? It’s as easy as A, B, C.
A-Admit that you fall short of God’s standards (you sin),
B-Believe that Jesus is God and that He died for your sin,
C-Commit to live your life as Jesus taught.

Becoming a Christian is at once an immediate action and also a lifelong process. What we've shared above are brief explanations to a simple and deep process that takes place in a person's life. If you believe that God is calling you to become a Christian we invite you to immediately follow the steps outlined above in a prayer to God. An example of a prayer to accept Jesus as your Savior and Lord is as follows:

Lord Jesus, I ask You to forgive my sins and save me from eternal separation from God. By faith, I accept Your work and death on the cross as sufficient payment for my sins. Thank You for providing the way for me to know You and to have a relationship with my heavenly Father. Through faith in You, I have eternal life. Thank You also for hearing my prayers and loving me unconditionally. Please give me the strength, wisdom, and determination to walk in the center of Your will. In Jesus’ name, amen.

What Do I Do Next?
  • Tell someone. It is a powerful affirmation to express your new faith in Jesus Christ. A great place to do this is during a worship service. In a worship service you'll find like minded believers who will celebrate your new found faith and rejoice with you in your decision. They will receive you into the body of Christ. Until you have that opportunity think of someone you know who believes in Jesus and tell them.
  • Find a Bible believing and teaching church to attend. Following Jesus is a lifelong growing experience. It is a journey not a destination. You will want to explore and learn about the incredible riches of God's grace and mercy on your behalf. A good church will also help you to live a life according to the teachings of Jesus when temptation comes to wander from His way.
  • Join a Bible believing and teaching church. As you grow in Christ you'll want to participate in various ministries to others and God will probably call you to become a leader teaching and leading others to know Jesus and serve Him as their Savior and Lord. This is best accomplished by being a member of a local body of Christ, a church.
  • Become part of a small group Bible study within your local church. Besides growing in your understanding of God you'll develop close friends who have the same goals in life and can support and help you in your day to day life. You'll also find opportunities to encourage and help others. This may be a Sunday morning Bible study, a Sunday evening Bible study, or another small group Bible study sometime during the week...or all three!
  • Determine to read the Bible daily and to engage in prayer. Praying is simply talking to God. One pattern to follow in your prayers is the ACTS acronym.
    • A - Adoration, give God praise for His goodness and greatness. Acknowledge Him as the supreme creator and only God.
    • C - Confession, agree with God about the times you failed to do as He has told you to do. Receive His forgiveness and move on.
    • T - Thanksgiving, give God thanks for everything in your life, the good because of the blessing to you and the bad because of what God can do with the bad in your life to make you more like Jesus Christ. Thank Him for those who are influential in your life, thank Him for your church, thank Him for your job, thank Him for Jesus Christ, thank Him for His beautiful world. Develop a life of giving thanks.
    • S- Supplication, finally make your requests known to God. Ask Him for help with the issues in your life. Ask Him for His healing in your life and the lives of others. Ask Him for the work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of unbelievers, especially those you know who do not know Jesus as their Savior. Ask for opportunities to serve Him in word and deed. Ask Him to make His word and way clear to you as you seek to know and serve Him better.
Our pastor would love to know about your decision to follow Christ. He and others are ready to receive you and help you grow in your knowledge of God and how to live for Him more completely. Give our pastor a call today to tell him about your decision. He'll pray with you and begin to help you live for Christ.
